Mount Stuart was undoubtedly out of date by the standards of the day when the 3rd Marquess of Bute, who had been born here in 1847, commissioned a major restructuring of the house in 1873.
Mount Stuart was home to the world's first domestic heated indoor swimming pool; and was the first house in Scotland to be lit by electricity.
In 1989 the house was transferred to the Mount Stuart Trust, whose role was to preserve it for public benefit, and although it is no longer a family home, Mount Stuart retains much that reflects the vision of the 3rd Marquess of Bute and those who have succeeded him.
