The Movement toward Socialism (Movimiento al Socialism, MAS) is a leftist party led by Evo Morales. At the legislative elections in 2002, the party won 11.9 % of the popular vote and 27 out of 130 seats in the House of Representatives and 8 out of 27 seats in the Senate. Its candidate at the presidential elections, Evo Morales, won 20.9 % of the popular vote. In the 2002 Bolivian elections, MAS came in second, a surprising upset for Bolivia's traditional parties. MAS evolved out of the movement to defend the interests of coca planters. Evo Morales has articulated the goals of his his party and popular organizations as the need to achieve national unity, and to develop a new hydrocarbon law which guarantees 50 percent of revenue to Bolivia, although political leaders of MAS recently interviewed showed interest in complete nationalization of the gas and oil industries. The Movement toward Socialism (Movimiento al Socialismo, MAS) is a left-wing Bolivian party led by Evo Morales, founded in 1997.
At the 2002 general election, the party came in second place with 19.4 % of the valid presidential vote and 14.6% of the valid uninominal vote, which gave it 27 out of 130 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and eight out of 27 seats in the Senate.
In the 2005 general election, Evo Morales was again the movement's presidential candidate.

Bolivia's weakness was demonstrated during the War of the Pacific (1879-83), when it lost its seacoast and the adjoining rich nitrate fields to Chile.
Bolivia's nine departments received greater autonomy under the Administrative Decentralization law of 1995, although the lowland departments- especially Santa Cruz and Tarija- are seeking increased autonomy.
Relations with Chile, strained since Bolivia's defeat in the War of the Pacific (1879-83) and its loss of the coastal province of Atacama, were severed from 1962 to 1975 in a dispute over the use of the waters of the Lauca River.
