Plot summary
In 1965, Glenn Holland takes a teaching job at a Portland, Oregon high school to help support his wife, pregnant with their son, while he tries to write a musical masterpiece. At first Mr. Holland is impatient with his students, some for their lack of appreciation for music, others for their incompetent playing. His son Cole (named after John Coltrane) is born deaf. Over the years, Mr. Holland spends more time with his students instead of with his son. The years of neglect lead to a family breakdown. Coltrane redirects here. ...
After thirty years of teaching at John F. Kennedy High School Mr. Holland learns that because of budget cuts, the fine arts programs at the school will be cancelled. After an attempt to convince the school board not to cancel the music program, Mr. Holland retires from teaching. In a final farewell, organized by his wife and many alumni of JFK High School, the alumni (including the governor of the state) and current band members perform the opus that Glenn Holland has spent thirty years writing.
