In the book, he is described as one of Willy Wonka's rival chocolate makers, president of Slugworth Chocolate Incorporated. Slugworth (along with Wonka's rivals Mr. Ficklegruber and Mr. Prodnose) sent in spies to steal the secret recipes to Wonka's treats; he began making candy balloons that you blow to incredible sizes, then pop them with a pin and gobble them up. His evil work (along with the other rivals) came close to ruining Wonka's factory. Wonka was forced to close his factory and fire all his workers. A few years later, Wonka's factory began working again (operated exclusively by Oompa Loompas) and his work continued to dominate the candy industry. Slugworth is never heard from again. In the 1971 film, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, the role of Slugworth was greatly expanded. He is described by Grandpa Joe as the worst of all the rival candy makers. As the Golden Tickets are found one by one, Slugworth is seen approaching each finder and whispering something into their ear. After Charlie finds the last ticket, Slugworth finds him and we learn what he was saying: Wonka is working on a candy that threatens to ruin him. He offers Charlie and the other kids big bucks ("10,000 of these", flashing some unknown currency) to get one piece of the candy and bring it to him to figure out the formula. At the end of the film, it is revealed that the man is not Slugworth, but his name is Mr. Wilkenson (Wonka's secret agent) and his offer was a moral test of character.
