Suspicion immediately falls on her shifty lodger, James Bently, whose clothes reveals traces of the victim's blood and hair. Yet something is amiss: Bentley just doesn't look like a murderer to the experienced eye of Superintendent Spence. Doubting the evidence he himself collected, he approaches Poirot to investigate further. Poirot has to bear a lot of hardships including a draughty guest house, horrendous cooking and an attempt on his life, before the murderer is unmasked.
Film version The novel was adapted by MGM in 1964 as "Murder Most Foul". However, in an unusual move, the character of Poirot was replaced with Christie's other most famous detective Miss Marple (portrayed by Margaret Rutherford).
