Eccles was declared a public purposes (picnic) reserve in 1926.
When the remainder of the Reserve was added in 1985, Mt. EcclesNational Park increased to 6120 hectares, its present size, which covers the majority of the lava flow from Mt. Eccles.
Mt. EcclesNational Park is 300km south-west of Melbourne, 45km south of Hamilton.
