Several systems that fit this description have been used by various armies. Some are given this name explicitly.


The most famous system is the Katyusha rocket launcher used by the Soviet Union during World War II and by its allies during the Cold War. This was a simple system with low accuracy in which the launchers were mounted on the back of a truck. Modern systems are often mounted on armoured, tracked vehicles, have a range of tens of kilometers, and may be guided for accuracy. The 82mm BM-8 and 132mm BM-13 Katyusha rocket launchers were built and fielded by the Soviet Union in World War II. These launchers acquired this name, unofficial but immediately recognized in the Red Army, from the title of a popular Russian wartime song, Katyusha. ...
