According to the game's manual, Mundus rose to power as a devil-prince and "took over the Devil Throne". It was as the Prince of the Underworld that he was defeated by, The Legendary Dark Knight Sparda and sealed within the Demon World. Two thousand years later, the gateway to the demon world was breached on Mallet Island and Mundus, assisted by the Sparda's corrupted son Vergil, attempted to open the gateway to conquer the world. However, he was defeated and sealed once again, this time by Sparda's other son, Dante. Although he has not appeared in a major role again, a statue of him can be glimpsed in the introduction to Devil May Cry 2. Mundus also makes a cameo appearance in the hidden ending in Devil May Cry 3 (the prequel to the first Devil May Cry), represented by three eyes, appearing to Vergil after the latter fell into the Demon World following a battle with Dante. He was then presumably defeated by Mundus (providing the explanation for why Vergil served Mundus in Devil May Cry). Look up monarch in Wiktionary, the free dictionary. ...

[edit] Trivia - Mundus is Latin for world or universe.
- Mundus appears in Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble (exclusively on the PSP version) as a boss along with Dante, Nelo Angelo, Trish, Jester, Doppleganger and Sparda as hidden characters. He plays almost identically to the penultimate boss Poseidon, and he is holding Trish in his hand, the level is about Dante, along with Nelo Angelo, Sparda and Jester, trying to free Trish and seal away Mundus, although why Jester and Nelo Angelo help is contradictory of their DMC goals.
