Map of Romania with Muntenia highlighted Muntenia or Greater Wallachia is a historical province of Romania, usually considered Wallachia-proper ("Muntenia", "Ţara Românească", and the seldomly used "Valahia" are synonyms in Romanian). It is situated between the Danube (south and east), the Carpathian Mountains (the Transylvanian Alps branch) and Moldavia (both north), and the Olt River to the west. Muntenia, Oltenia, Dobrogea, Tara Amlasului si Tara Fagarasului are provincies of Tara Romaneasca. Muntenia is the largest and this is why sometimes Tara Romaneasca is called also Muntenia in some documents. All four capitals of Tara Romaneasca were in Muntenia: Campulung Muscel with its legendary King Negru Voda Court, Curtea de Arges, Targoviste and the last one Bucuresti, the capital of today all Romania.
