The Mureş (in Romanian, in Hungarian: Maros, in German: Mieresch / Marosch) is an approx. 725 km long river, rising in the Giurgeu Range in the Eastern Carpathian Mountains, Romania. It joins Tisza River at Szeged, in southeast Hungary. It flows through the Romanian counties Harghita (Hargita), Mureş (Maros), Alba (Fehér), Hunedoara (Hunyad) and Arad, and the Hungarian county Csongrád. The cities Reghin (Százrégen), Târgu Mureş (Marosvásárhely), Aiud (Nagyenyed), Alba Iulia (Gyulafehérvár), Deva (Déva), Arad (all in Romania), Makó and Szeged (both in Hungary) lie on the river Mureş. Ungheni is situated on the middle stream of the Mures River, where the Niraj River runs into the Mures River, 11 km away from Târgu Mures, on the international European road E 60, Târgu Mures - Cluj Napoca.
The town is located in the Mures meadow, between the Madaras Pod - Târnave hills and Niraj hills, as well as in the lower part of the Niraj valley.
On the 18th of April, 2004, Ungheni was declared town, its citizens hoping for a better future once with the opening of the Vidrasau industrial park, with the development of the airport and with the accumulation of further investments.
