Murray County is a county located in the state of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 36,506. The county's county seat is Chatsworth, Georgia6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 898 km˛ (347 mi˛). 892 km˛ (344 mi˛) of it is land and 6 km˛ (2 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.71% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 36,506 people, 13,286 households, and 10,256 families residing in the county. The population density is 41/km˛ (106/mi˛). There are 14,320 housing units at an average density of 16/km˛ (42/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 95.30% White, 0.62% Black or African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 2.64% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. 5.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 13,286 households out of which 39.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.80% are married couples living together, 11.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.80% are non-families. 18.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.73 and the average family size is 3.10.


In the county the population is spread out with 28.00% under the age of 18, 9.50% from 18 to 24, 33.00% from 25 to 44, 21.50% from 45 to 64, and 8.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 99.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.50 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $36,996, and the median income for a family is $42,155. Males have a median income of $29,812 versus $23,035 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,230. 12.70% of the population and 9.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.90% of those under the age of 18 and 19.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

However, the new county was not able to function as a county because of its size and the fact that Cherokee Indians still occupied portions of the land.
Murray, who served as Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives in 1825, was a candidate for Congress at the time of his death in 1832.
