Encyclopedia > Musalia Mudavadi

Musalia Mudavadi is the son of Moses Mudavadi and was the last Vice-President of Kenya under Daniel Arap Moi's regime. He was appointed in an attempt, that would end in failure, to bring the Luhya tribe into the KANU camp, which had been the party of government since independance. Mudavadi ran for Vice-President and was Uhuru Kenyatta's running mate in the 2002 elections. Despite the support of the outgoing President Moi, the KANU political machine and the provincial administration, the Kenyatta/ Mudavadi ticket was roundly beaten and Mudavadi lost his Sabati seat. More recently Mudavadi has been making a political comeback by aligning himself with the 'No' side in the forthcoming Referendum on the proposed new Constitution. This aligns him clearly with Raila Odinga's LDP and he could become the leading Luhya politician, should Odinga and allies win the next presidential elecion in 2007.
