Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,163 km˛ (449 mi˛). 1,136 km˛ (439 mi˛) of it is land and 27 km˛ (10 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 2.32% water.
Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 41,722 people, 15,847 households, and 11,283 families residing in the county. The population density is 37/km˛ (95/mi˛). There are 16,786 housing units at an average density of 15/km˛ (38/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 90.72% White, 0.70% Black or African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.83% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 6.05% from other races, and 1.37% from two or more races. 11.92% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 15,847 households out of which 34.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.90% are married couples living together, 9.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.80% are non-families. 24.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.07.
