The Tacoma area was selected in part because it is the hometown of legendary glass artist Dale Chihuly. The museum, designed by architect Arthur Erickson, opened in July of 2002 and is located near the University of Washington Tacoma in downtown. The museum exhibits a conical building, which is used for glass blowing demonstrations. There are also several other outdoor exhibits including the Water Forest, reflecting pools and a waterfront promenade.

Witness art coming alive as the Museum’s resident team of artists demonstrate the fascinating process of creating works of art from molten glass. Glass blowing is a mesmerizing and magical process, and many visitors spend hours in the Hot Shop. What you will see is not just a staged demo, but an authentic artistic process—real artists engaged in real creative projects.

Visiting Artist Program

The Museum’s Visiting Artist Program invites internationally known artists and emerging artists from the region and around the world to work with the Museum’s resident Hot Shop Team to explore, invent and create with glass. The museum gives artists an opportunity to experiment and push the limits of their work. Offering a diverse mixture of culture, style, focus and expertise, each artist creates a sense of excitement and wonder, giving you the rare opportunity to witness professionals making art.


The Museum invites artists for week-long residencies (usually Wednesday-Sunday) and shorter residencies (usually Mondays and Tuesdays in the summer and Fridays the rest of the year).

Summer Hours Open 7 days a week from Memorial Day to Labor Day 10 am to 5 pm Monday through Saturday 12 to 5 pm Sunday 10 am to 8 pm Third Thursday of each month

Fall-Winter-Spring Hours Open 5 days a week between Labor Day and Memorial Day 10 am to 5 pm Wednesday through Saturday 12 to 5 pm Sunday 10 am to 8 pm Third Thursday of each month


(Closed Mondays, Tuesdays, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.)


Hot Shop Hours You can see live glassmaking in the Hot Shop whenever the Museum is open, except for when the team breaks for lunch—usually 1-2pm.

ROMAN GLASS: Reflections on Cultural Change is a traveling exhibition organized by the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology that illustrates how the craft of glassmaking was influenced by historical events and changing social values in the Roman World.
Glass, a material developed in the eastern Mediterranean region, largely came to Rome with its makers, Syrian and Judaean craftsmen, many of whom were slaves.

The museum's most striking feature is a tilted 90-foot-tall cone wrapped in stainless steel, which vents heat from the museum's working hotshop, with an amphitheater for visitors to watch artists working with molten glass at temperatures that can reach 2,000°F. In cold weather, heat from the hotshop will be circulated to warm the entire museum.
The Museum of Glass is the only U.S. venue for the show, which was developed in Germany.
