Muskhogean stock (also Muskogean) refers to a Native American stock that inhabitated the Gulf Coast region of what is today the United States. The name derives from the chief tribe in the Creek confederacy, the Muskogee, but consisted of the Creeks, Choctaws, Chickasaws, Seminoles, and other tribes. Their inhabitated territory consisted of Mississippi, western Tennessee, eastern Kentucky, Alabama, most of Georgia, and later nearly all Florida. Muskiogean traditions assign the west and north-west as the original home of the stock. They are first encountered in 1527, with the landing of the Spanish on the Gulf Coast. The Muskogean peoples were settled and lived in villages, many of which were fortified. They supported themselves through agriculture and had an elaborate social system. Collectively their spoken languages are known as the Muskogean languages.
