Use of myki

myki is designed as the replacement to Metcard. It is a smartcard which stores ticket and fare information to travel on public transport in Melbourne. It is a time and zone based ticket, the same as how Metcard operates. myki will store monetary value which will have the correct fare deducted from to ensure the best fare is calculated. The Metcard is the ticket used to access public transport in Melbourne, Australia (under the moniker Metlink). myki will be requires to be topped up as the stored value diminishes along the way. This can be done in the same variety of way as stated above. One can also register myki and have it linked to a bank account to automatically top up when the stored value reaches a certain level.

myki requires one to scan on and scan off. This has its advantages and disadvantages. It is safe because it can stay inside a wallet or purse whilst being scanned, which eliminates the need to pay with cash. However, if a ticket is not validated when leaving the transport, passengers will be charged the full all-zone fare, even it their trip was very short.
