Myrtos (1090 words)
Myrtos was voted as the number one beach by the public the last few years in the internet survey contacted by thalassa.gr.
We found Myrtos to be an excellent beach (one of the best we have seen in Greece) well worth a trip out of the way to experience its waters.
Myrtos is a very wide beach however and the rocks would never reach the part of the beach where most people sunbathe.
The Early Minoan Period:The Settlements (3797 words)
More recently, the excavator has reported the Myrtos destruction dates to be 2850-2305 B.C. One possible reason for the foundation of the site in EM IIA is a population rise in central Crete which caused expansion to the east and the foundation of numerous settlements there (including Vasiliki).
Thus Myrtos appears quite closely comparable in terms of size, population, and length of occupation (three to four generations) to the typical Cycladic settlement of the Early Bronze Age (see preceding handout).
Myrtos was never reoccupied; Vasiliki continued to be a village for centuries but never again produced complexes as impressive as the Red and West Houses.
