Mzuzu is the capital of Malawi's Northern region and the third largest city in the country, with a population of 119,592 (2003). It is in the center of an agricultural region, specializing in tea and coffee cultivation. A university has recently opened in Mzuzu as well. There are adequate accommodations for tourists visiting the north of the country, particularly the Nyika Plateau and Livingstone Mission. The Viphya Forest to the south of the town is often named as the largest man-made forest in the world.

Mzuzu is the gateway to the Northern Region of Malawi and as such is considered the best base from which to explore the spectacular scenery of the Viphya and Nyika Plateaux, Vwaza Marsh as well as the Khondowe Plateau overlooking the Lake.
Mzuzu has a climate ideal for agriculture and the two most important crops produced on the slopes of surrounding mountains are coffee and rubber.
As recently as the 1960's Mzuzu was difficult to reach, which explains why the north is not as developed as the rest of the country.
