History The genesis of NIIT Technologies can be traced to the mid ’80s, when a software arm of NIIT Limited was created to cater to the demands of an Indian market just awakening to computerization. Unlike the bulk of software and services companies in the country that were export-oriented, NIIT wet its feet in the domestic market, drawing sustenance and gaining vital experience from its interactions with customers on its home ground. As NIIT Limited, which pioneered the concept of computer training in the country, went about establishing the foundations of IT literacy in India, it drew under its umbrella both individual as well as corporate learners. Seeing its corporate customers grapple with IT deployment issues, the company realized it needed to go beyond its training mandate and help companies understand their IT needs, pick the relevant technologies and assist in the implementation. Thus was born NIIT’s software operation -- a logical extension of its training endeavour. NIIT pioneered the packaged software distribution business in India through tie-ups with reputed software majors such as Information Builders Inc. and Sybase. Later, more partnerships were developed with other leading technology providers. For a long time, most IT buyers had considered software an integral part of hardware, necessarily free. NIIT turned the notion on its head with a scheme where hardware, a PC XT and PC AT, at that time, was bundled free with a copy of licensed software. This unique marketing program established the notion of “value” associated with licensed software and opened the market for packaged software in India. The 1990s represented a turning point for the company and the country. It was a period, when faced with an acute foreign exchange crisis and oil-pool deficit, India was looking at globalization. As “export or perish” became the new success mantra, NIIT embarked on its overseas journey, towards the world’s largest market, the US, and towards Singapore, an IT-savvy nation in need of technology solutions. The company sent some of its brightest software developers to work in the Engineering departments of companies with whom it had built software-marketing relationships. Gradually, it moved up the value chain, expanding its expertise to software engineering, application management and systems integration. Since inception itself, its software activities revolved around its offshore development centers in India, which have now emerged as a major component of its global delivery model. Today, NIIT Technologies has metamorphosed into a global company with a local flavor. Its operations are run worldwide through wholly-owned subsidiaries incorporated in each major geography. It has customized software solutions to suit the needs of specific markets. It has also migrated vertically to focused industry verticals. In order to rapidly establish itself in its focused domains, it embarked on an aggressive acquisition drive. It took under its wings companies such as US-based Osprey, an end-to-end solutions provider specializing on the SAP platform, DEI, a firm with domain expertise in the insurance vertical, Europe-based AD Solutions and UK IT Solutions provider to the Insurance sector, ROOM Solutions. It also established a joint venture with ESRI Inc., a global leader in GIS to offer specialized solutions in this segment. Year 2002 marked a significant milestone for NIIT’s software arm— for the first time, it notched up revenues higher than that of the education division. This triggered the move to establish NIIT Technologies as a separate company. A restructuring exercise initiated in 2003, resulted in the creation of NIIT Technologies in June, 2004. Today, NIIT Technologies ranks among the Top 20 IT Solutions providers from India, with a broad portfolio of offerings and a significant stake in verticals such as Banking Financial Services & Insurance, Travel & Transportation and Retail & Manufacturing. The company’s commitment to quality and adherence to global standards has further strengthened its credentials among discerning customers.
