National Institute of Technology - Tiruchirapalli NIT-T NIT-T is one of the 17 engineering college's established by the Indian government. Today, NIT-T is an autonomous co-educational engineering college, with 10 undergraduate, 22 graduate programs leading to Ph.D, and one architecture and management programs respectively. NIT-T is located in Thuvakudi which is in the Tiruchy-Tanjore highway, some 17 Km from Trichy. NIT-T was formerly called as the Regional Engineering College -Trichy. Later in 2003 it was granted Deemed University Status. NIT-T offers courses in almost all major engineering fields. Admission to the undergraduate course is competitive, through the All India Engineering Entrance Exam AIEEE, and only the cream of the students leaving school attend NIT-T. Admission to the post-graduate courses is through GATE. Generally the UG(undergraduate) students are better equipped and oppurtunistic than the graduate students. NIT-T is still not a research institution, but strives to be one.
Prominent events at NIT-T include Festember, a 3 day mega cultural extravaganza for colleges in the region, and Pragyan, a grand national technical festival. The computer support facilities provided in NIT-T are among the best in Indian educational institutes. NIT-T has the Octagon which is open 24/7 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout the year. Because of the former name for this college, a student/alumnus of the college is informally known as a RECTian.
