Role in the series

Readers are first introduced to Nagini in the first chapter of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. In that chapter, Voldemort, Pettigrew and Nagini are living in the abandoned house of Voldemort's father (The Riddle House) discussing their plot to induce Harry Potter's participation in the Triwizard Tournament. Nagini is the first to notice Frank Bryce, the Riddles' gardener who still lived on the premises, and uses Parseltongue to communicate with Voldemort and alert him to Bryce's presence. Bryce is then murdered by Voldemort and eaten by Nagini. During the fourth year Harry spends at Hogwarts, Voldemort's temporary body was sustained by Nagini's "milk" (presumably her venom), harvested by Peter Pettigrew. Nagini was present in the graveyard when Voldemort returned to power at the end of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and Voldemort had promised her that she could devour Harry after he killed him. In the fifth book, Harry witnesses Nagini attacking Arthur Weasley in one of his dreams. He saw this from Nagini's point of view, and felt as though he himself was the snake, a fact which disturbed him greatly; at other points, particularly when around Dumbledore, Harry would receive a sudden jolt of fury, described as being like a snake wanting to strike. Dumbledore believes this to be due to Harry's mental connection to Voldemort, with Harry's witnessing of the attack being because Voldemort's mind "happened to be" in Nagini at the time. This is the first indication of Nagini and Voldemort's deeper connection, having the ability to share each other's thoughts and, unwillingly, share them with Harry as well. As the series continues, Nagini's role becomes more important. By the sixth installment (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince), she is discovered to be one of Lord Voldemort's horcruxes, an object that holds a part of his soul. She was made into Voldemort's sixth intentional and seventh in total Horcrux during the murder of Bertha Jorkins[1]. In the final book, Nagini consumes Professor Charity Burbage, Hogwarts' Muggle Studies teacher, after the Killing Curse is used on her. Later on, Nagini is placed inside the body of Bathilda Bagshot by Voldemort, and uses the hiding place to launch a surprise attack on Harry while he is in Godric's Hollow. Because snake senses are different, being able to sense heat and movement in a way humans can't, Nagini is able to detect Harry and Hermione even when they were under the Invisibility Cloak.[2] In the magical world of the Harry Potter series of fictional novels, many spells are used by the characters. ... After discovering that Harry is searching for his Horcruxes, Voldemort places Nagini into a protective magical shell to prevent her from being killed, and uses her to slay Severus Snape by expanding the shell over Snape and trapping him with Nagini. When Harry goes to meet Voldemort in the forest---which Harry believes will lead to his death, thus leaving Nagini alive---he speaks with Neville Longbottom and asks him to kill Nagini, believing this wise in case Ron and Hermione happen to die before they get the chance. Shortly after, when Harry is apparently dead, Nagini is released from the protective shell and is draped around Voldemort's shoulders during the Death Eater's "victory march" back to Hogwarts. Neville openly defies Voldemort, and Voldemort uses him as an example by setting the Sorting Hat on fire and placing it on Neville's head. When the Death Eaters are attacked, Neville breaks free from Voldemort's spell, pulls Godric Gryffindor's sword from the Sorting Hat and beheads Nagini, killing her. Lord Voldemort is outraged, and Harry manages to cast a Shield Charm between Neville and Voldemort, before he strikes. This act by Neville clears the way for Harry's ultimate victory over Voldemort.
