Nahariyya was founded by German Jewish immigrants in the 1930s. It is located on the Mediterranean coast just South of the Lebanese border at Rosh Hanikra. Sderot Ga'aton, the city's main street is spliced down the middle by the Ga'aton River and thickly overlaid with the branches of spreading eucalyptus trees [1]. The city gets its name from this river since nahar means river in Hebrew. The Nahariya Train Station and the Nahariya Central Bus Station are near the intersection of Sderot Ga'aton and the main highway. Sderot Ga'aton continues from the intersection through the heart of Nahariya leading to where the Ga'aton River empties into the Mediterranean Sea. There used to be an attraction where people could ride on small motorboats near this mouth of the river but the mouth has largely dried up. According to CBS, in 2001 the ethnic makeup of the city was 97.3% Jewish and other non-Arabs, without significant Arab population. In 2001 there were 355 immigrant settlers. According to CBS, in 2001 there were 22,200 males and 23,700 females. The population of the city was spread out with 29.5% 19 years of age or younger, 16.3% between 20 and 29, 18.8% between 30 and 44, 17.3% from 45 to 59, 4.1% from 60 to 64, and 13.9% 65 years of age or older. The population growth rate in 2001 was 4.2%.


Income

According to CBS, as of 2000, in the city there were 17,916 salaried workers and 1,283 are self-employed. The mean monthly wage in 2000 for a salaried worker in the city is ILS 5,736, a real change of 7.0% over the course of 2000. Salaried males have a mean monthly wage of ILS 7,353 (a real change of 7.6%) versus ILS 3,950 for females (a real change of 2.5%). The mean income for the self-employed is 9,078. Education

According to CBS, there are 22 schools and 7,541 students in the city. They are spread out as 15 elementary schools and 4,074 elementary school students, and 10 high schools and 3,467 high school students. 56.5% of 12th grade students were entitled to a matriculation certificate in 2001.

The Nahariyya station, situated on the west side of the tracks, is being rebuilt with a high-level platform, and a temporary station has been constructed (with a low-level platform) on the east side.
Hardly anyone was in my car when we departed Nahariyya, but a number of passengers boarded in Chatsrot Yasaf (a small village, where only some of the trains stop) and Akko, where we arrived at 4:27 p.m.
As was the case on my trip to Nahariyya, the northbound train was late, and we did not depart until 4:32 p.m.
