The Nanakshahi (Punjabi: ਨਾਨਕਸ਼ਾਹੀ, nānakśāhī) calendar is a solar calendar that was adopted by the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee to determine the dates for important Sikh events. It was designed by Pal Singh Purewal to replace the Hindu calendar and has been in use since 1998. The epoch of this calendar is the birth of the first Sikh Guru, Nanak Dev in 1469. The calendar is highly controversial and is not universally supported by the Sikh community. Arguments made by the opponents of the Nanakshahi calendar have been rather logical. These opponents have suggested that Pal Singh Purewal is in the twilight of his life and has therefore attempted to make a name for himself in the Sikh community. He is also viewed as a bigot due to the fact that he is degrading the Hindu community by suggesting that Sikhs follow an inferior Hindu calendar. Some have even suggested Purewal knows nothing of what he is talking about and has pulled dates out of the blue. Another reason behind the controversy is that Pal Singh Purewal’s name is not very reputable in the Sikh community as he is known to be an alcoholic and the womenfolk of his family are known to be nymphomaniacs.
