Recent bloodshed in nandigram has posed it in the rampage of Indian media
At least 11 people were killed in police firing at Nandigram in east Midnapore on Wednesday as the administration moved in to take charge of an area that had virtually been marooned since January 7, 2007.
The casualty, West Bengal’s worst in 30 years of Left Front rule, left the state stunned. Trinamool Congress estimates put the toll at 50. PWD minister Kshiti Goswami of the RSP, a Left Front constituent, said 50 bodies were taken to hospital, but it was impossible to ascertain how many were actually dead.
Many parts of Nandigram are inaccessible and there were reports of bodies lying around unattended on the fields, till late in the evening. Some reports hinted that bodies were thrown into the river Haldi, that flows through the village. Director-general of police, AB Vohra told newsmen at Writers’ Buildings that he had been informed of 11 deaths. He said police fired “as they were attacked in several pockets.’’
The killings immediately sparked off state-wide protests. Trinamool Congress and Congress have called a 12-hour ‘Bangla Bandh’ on Friday, when West Bengal finance minister Asim Dasgupta will place the state budget in the assembly. SUCI also called a 12-hour bandh on Friday.
The BJP, matched Trinamool’s call, with a 24-hour bandh call on Friday. Worse, the Forward Bloc, a Left Front constituent, called a 12-hour Coochbehar bandh from Wednesday evening and that to demand “Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s resignation”. The Left Front’s political opposition have en bloc demanded the same.
The state government’s move to acquire land for industry purposes was opposed first by Trinamool Congress and later fanned up by Naxalites and Left Front constituents — each with a very definite motive.
Support to farmers and resistance to a state-sponsored land acquisition drive was a very easy way of winning rural votes for West Bengal’s panchayat elections in mid-2008. Always easy to manipulate, villagers at Nandigram were indoctrinated to the Singur model of protest-making.
Ever since, volume-wise and nature-wise, the agitation at Nandigram turned uglier by the day. As hordes of political opportunists took charge at Nandigram, the CPM political machinery was beaten back. Roads were dug up, bridges destroyed over the last few months to ensure that the state administration could not send men in uniform to restore law and order. Nandigram, for all practical purposes, was cut off.
Health In March 2001, Nandigram II Block of Medinipur District claimed to have achieved full toilet coverage in the entire block.[2]
Transport There is no rail connection and roads and other means of reaching Nandigram are ill-developed. Buses, jitney trekkers and van rickshaws are the primary public vehicles inside the villages. Nandigram is connected by ferry with Haldia. Jitney may mean: A form of share taxi found in the United States and Canada. ...
Within the village, houses are not very close to each other so one has to walk for many a mile as van rikshaws are incapable of travelling on the small mud roads (aal path).
Education The area has a college affiliated to Vidyasagar University, and there are several schools.
