Nankai High School in Tianjin, China (天津南开中学, Tianjin Nankai Zhongxue), founded in 1904, is the first in the series of Nankai institutions established by Zhang Boling and Yan Fansun. It was created to be a modern Western style school, providing an alternative to China's traditional Confucian system of education, which emphazises obedience and respect for the social hierarchy. Currently the school focuses most of its efforts on preparation for examination of university entrance, and emphasizes subjects like science and mathematics over the humanities. However the school allows students some freedom in their choice of subject and attempts to encourage debate in classrooms. A senior class holds discussions on topics including the types classes which the school should provide, and even the mandatory raising of the national flag. The principal states "They have to learn how to be leaders."


In Nankai High School's time-honoured history, many talented people graduated from it and became leaders in various disciplines. The most famous alumni are Zhou Enlai, premier and foreign minister of China when PRC was founded and Wen Jiabao, premier of China since 2003 till now(2005). Also there are approximately fifty academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering who graduated from Nankai High School.


Nowadays, Nankai High School encourages its students to take part in many kinds of competition in science and mathematics, such as National High School Physics Competition, National High School Mathematics Competition, National High School Chemistry Competition, National High School Computer Science Competition, National High School Biology Competition. Many of the students have won the highest prize. The best of them also took part in the international competition: IPHO, IMO, etc. From 1998 to 2005, four students from Nankai High School in Tianjin have been the IPHO gold medal winner.


As of 2005, the enrollment is approximately 4,000 students, and there are some 300 staff.

Both Nankai High School where WU completed his remaining years of junior and senior high school (1921-1925) and Nankai University where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree (1929) were conducted in a conservative, disciplined atmosphere which he believes was good for him.
