Naphthoquinone, or more precisely 1,4-naphthoquinone, is an organic compound. It forms yellow triclinic crystals and has an odor similar to benzoquinone. It is sparingly soluble in cold water, slightly soluble in petroleum ether, and freely soluble in most polar organic solvents. In alkaline solutions it produces a reddish-brown color. Because of their aromatic stability, 1,4-naphthoquinone derivatives are known to possess anti-bacterial and anti-tumor properties. Image File history File links Naphthoquinone. ... Process for removing naphthoquinone from phthalic anhydride produced through air oxidation of naphthalene - Patent ... (2178 words)
More specifically, the undesirable byproduct naphthoquinone is effectively removed from crude phthalic anhydride by treating the crude phthalic anhydride with small quantities of polymeric oils containing several double bonds optionally in the presence of alkali.
Because naphthoquinone is within the boiling range of phthalic anhydride, its presence diminishes the color and purity of the phthalic anhydride.
Thus the effective removal of naphthoquinone from crude phthalic anhydride is surprisingly achieved by treating crude phthalic anhydride containing naphthoquinone at a temperature of 180.degree.-280.degree.
