The device uses the element Naqahdah to provide power. The Earth version of the device was created by Samantha Carter, based on Orbanian designs, in the episode "Learning Curve". The naquadah generator has been used to power not only many Earth-based technology but can be adapted to power other alien technology, such as Ancient technology.
