During the 1870s, the bushranger Matthew Clarke is reputed to have had a campsite along the banks of what is now the Narrabundah wetlands, along the eastern edge of the suburb. Narrabundah contains a primary school (Narrabundah Primary), a senior secondary college (Narrabundah College) and the now defunct St Benedict's institute of catholic remediation.

Rocks in Narrabundah are from the Silurian age. Mount Painter Volcanics dark grey to green grey dacitic tuff. This can be viewed in a park on Brockman St. Canberra Formation, calcareous shale is in the north of the Deakin Fault. Narrabundah Ashstone Member is found in east and southeast of the suburb. The Deakin Fault runs from Frome St, it is displaced from Anembo south to Goyder St. The South Fyshwick Fault runs east from the Narrabundah Primary School, separating ashstone in the south from the Canberrra Formation in the north.
