As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 64,257 and the density of 474.40 persons per km˛. The total area is 135.45 km˛.


The city was founded on March 15, 1947.


One of the famous attractions is the Naruto whirlpool between Naruto and Awaji Island in Hyogo, Japan.
