Nasinu is an urban area in Fiji. It is officially designated a "Town" (and was formally incorporated as such in 1999), even though its population (approximately 80,000) is twice that of Lautoka, which is officially a "city". Nasinu is the second largest urban area, after the capital of Suva, and is one of Fiji's fastest-growing towns. Its land area of 4,500 square kilometers is the largest of any municipal area in Fiji, and more than twice that of Suva. Nasinu is governed by a Town Council of 21 members, the largest municipal body in Fiji. The Councillors, who serve three-year terms, elect a Mayor for a term of one year, renewable any number of times. The last municipal polls, held on 22 October 2005, were won by the Fiji Labour Party (FLP), which took 14 seats against 7 for the United Fiji Party (SDL), which had previously controlled the council. The SDL Councillors boycotted the first session of the new council, which elected Rajeshwar Kumar as Mayor, and threatened to challenge the election results in court.
