The National Register of Historic Places is the USA 's official list of districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects worthy of preservation. As of 2004 , the list includes approximately 78,000 entries, including all National Historic Landmarks and other icons of American culture, history, engineering, and architecture.
National Park Service , the Register was authorized under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 . Its goals are to coordinate and help groups such as the National Trust for Historic Preservation identify and protect U. S. historic sites.
