About

The Institute is located about 160 km north-west of Calcutta on the Howrah-Delhi Railway-Route and overlooking the great Grand-Trunk Road. The Institute spreads over an area of 187 acres (76 ha) of land. It is fully residential and co-educational. At present about 1800 boys and 300 girls reside in seven boys' hostels and two girls' hostels. The annual undergraduate intake is about 450 students. The Institute is a deemed to be a university which awards B.Tech., M.Tech, M.C.A ,M.B.A and Ph.D. degrees to students after their successful completion of the specified courses. Following a procedure laid down by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of India, National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, selects candidates for its own admission and 16 other NITs who admit such students on the basis of statewise quota. Campus

National Institute of Technology, Durgapur is a fully residential Institute. There are seven hostels for boys and two hostels for girls to accommodate all the admitted students. A canteen for the students and the staff is located near the main building. A second canteen is located at rear exit of the Main Building of the Institute in addition to another near the hostels.


All the teachers and most of the staff members reside in the residential quarters provided by the college. A modern guest house beside the Director's Bungalow extends hospitality to the guests of the Institute. In the middle of the residential area there is a shopping complex which meets the daily requirements of the residents.


A model co-educational higher secondary school has been set up for the wards of the employees of the Institute. Also there is a branch of State Bank of India, Canara Bank and a Post-Office within the Institute Campus.

To encourage research oriented thinking in young minds NIT-Durgapur recently started offering Research Scholar Programme and the Institute recently started bio-technology engineering course to contribute quality manpower to this booming field. As the Institute becomes fully autonomous, NIT-Durgapur is planning to launch various courses such as Integrated Master courses, stressing on VLSI and signal processing, keeping in mind industry requirements. Institute also planning to increase the intake of students in the coming 4-5 years to produce high-quality technical manpower. Climate

Durgapur is located in eastern side of India. September, October time is preferable to visit because of stable weather and more than that this is Durga Puja Festival time in Bengal. February, March (spring season) also preferable time because the weather at this time is really enjoyable. In winter season temperature drops to 6 degree Celsius and in summers temperatures raises to 45 degree Celsius. This summarises the somewhat volatile weather of Durgapur. Industries

It is located very close to India’s biggest coalfields in the Raniganj-Dhanbad area. Durgapur has a whole gamut of manufacturing industries. Among them Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) and Alloy Steel Plant (ASP) are the 2 biggest ones and around which the city and the other industries came up. Among the other major industries in Durgapur are: Durgapur Projects Ltd. (DPL), Philips Carbon Black Ltd. (PCBL), Alstom Power Boilers and Durgapur Thermal Power Station (DTPS). Durgapur reflects the image of an industrialized India; a perfect blend of culture and modernization. Today it is one of the most important industrial belts in India.

There are now a bunch of hotels and motels in Durgapur which provides options. A few are:

  • Peerless Inn(erstwhile Maharaja International) is the usual choice. Hotel is located in the City Center Area.It is relatively expensive compared to the other hotels, primarily because of its 3 star status and a plethora of cosy facilities.

  • 1. People are industrious in nature and well educated and helpful.
  • 2. The lifestyle and standard of living is simply far better than most of West Bengal.
  • 3. Durgapur boasts some of the best High schools in the west bengal and Durgapur colleges producing more IIT,NIT students and Durgapur have some of the best coaching Institutes.
  • 4. Infra-structure such as roads, clean water, electricity and tele communications are much better than Calcutta and other places of Bengal.
  • 5. Road space is 35% compared to Calcutta's 6%. Hence very rare traffic snarls. This is in line with UN urban guidelines.
  • 6. Air quality in residential areas is vey good. It fell quite a bit during the industrial upsurge in 2002. Now with environmental measures in place, it has gotten really good.
  • 7. Crime other than petty thefts etc., is pretty much absent. It is very safe for women.
  • 8. One of the two areas where Durgapur is lacking (and so is rest of Bengal) is top-quality health-care.But there are some famous private hospitals in Durgapur where you can get best treatment.Another aspect Durgapur lacking in is lack of entertainment options(Multiplexes).

Some of the places to be visited in Durgapur are Rahreshwar Shibtola,City Center, Benachity, MANTRA, Ajoy River, Kali Temple, Kumara Mangalam Park, Durgapur Barrage, The Steel Plant, The Troika Park. The main tourist attraction is the Durgapur Barrage over the Damodar. It is a breathtaking sight during the monsoons, when the river is swollen. The gardens around it are an ideal place for a picnic. Durgapur is essentially an industrial town (mainly steel). The environs are balmy, however, and there are a couple of things to see, notably the Durgapur Barrage on the Damodar River. A couple of riverside retreats have also reportedly come up. Durgapur is well-connected to Kolkata by train (about 3 hours). Still no airport in sight, although there is an airstrip and some talk of Air Sahara starting a service.


A couple of nice excursions can be made from here.Digha, Shantiniketan—a township set up by the Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore—is particularly rewarding. Bakreshwar, with its hot water springs, is not far.From Durgapur Darjeeling (which is located in Siliguri District) is 12 hours away and many northeast tourist spots (Sikkim and many Hill stations) are also not really far.
