Introduction

National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (NIT) (Hindi: राष्ट्रीय प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान, रौरकेला), formerly known as the Regional Engineering College, (REC) is one of the top premier national level institutions for technical education in India. NIT is a joint undertaking of Government of India and Government of Orissa. NIT Rourkela was established in 1961 under the able vision of the then Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru. Hindi (Devanagari: or , IAST: , IPA: ), an Indo-European language spoken mainly in northern and central India, is one of the official languages of the Union government of India. ...


Today, nearly fifty years later, NIT Rourkela continues to contribute significantly in the growth of the techno-economic strength of the country in a number of ways. It has produced high quality engineers and scientists, and continues to do so. Today, alumni of NIT Rourkela are doing well in various capacities as entrepreneurs, managers, technocrats, administrators, consultants, advisers and as faculty and researchers, both in India and abroad. At home, they are contributing to the growth of the techno-economic strength of India and also as entrepreneurs, thereby generating employment. Abroad, the alumni have enhanced the prestige of the Institute and the country by their excellent performance in their chosen fields. The amount of quality research undertaken at the institute is also phenomenal.


The institute is managed by the Board of Governors of National Institute of Technology (Rourkela) Society and vested with significant degree of administrative and financial autonomy. Government of India have recognised the institute as a premier institution of repute and have developed it as a center of excellence under plan funding. The institute has been modernised by two foreign collaborative funding agencies i.e. the Material theme in the Materials and Metallurgical Engineering department under Indo-UK. REC project and the Computer Science and Electronics streams under World Bank cum Swiss Development Corporation IMPACT project.


Campus

The campus of the institute consisting of the institute buildings, halls of residence and staff colony is situated at the eastern end of Rourkela steel city, beyond Sector-1 over an area of 2.62 km² of land provided by the Government of Orissa. It is a residential campus offering accommodation to faculty, staff and students. The campus has all the amenities for developing personal, social and academic skills of the student community.


There are eight halls of residence within the campus as the courses are mostly residential on full-time basis. Major attractions among the male students of the institute includes legendary [Backpost], which serves purpose of refreshment and chillout zone. Backpost has been the cultural epicentre for the students since decades now. The residential campus is equipped with a vast stadium which has been host for several national level university tournaments. There are several other courts within the hostels and residential campus of the Institute. The campus also houses Student Activity Centre (SAC), Auditorium (AV Hall), Canteens (Hexagon, Nescafe and Canteen), Dispensary, Co-Operative Store, Post Office, SBI Bank, Computer Centre, Workshop, Research Centres and Temples.


The Main Building of the Institute is surrounded by the department buildings. Electrical Engineering, Metallurgical and Material Sciences Engineering and Civil Engineering departments are housed mostly in the Main Building. The Main Building also houses the Central Library, Administrative and Academic sections.


The overall environment is intellectually stimulating for the students of the full-time residential programs.

Location

The city of Rourkela came into prominence in the year 1954-55, with the decision of the Government of India to set up the first Public Sector Steel Plant in this locality in collaboration with the then West Germany. The city is a huge metropolis connected with all parts of the country by railway and road. The population of the city is about 6 lakhs. Places like Radhika, Madhuban, Checkpost, Pahadi etc are popular hangouts among the students.
