National Institute of Technology in city of Calicut (also NIT Calicut or NITC) is one of the premier institutions for technical education in India. It was set up in 1961 as Regional Engineering College, Calicut (CREC), and received university status in 2002. Presently (2005), it's director is Dr. S.S. Gokhale.


National Institute of Technology has a popular digital library, NALANDA which houses a good collection of e-books and other resources.


NIT Calicut was the setting of the "Rajan Case" were one of the students of the institute died after being held (reportedly for being a Naxalite) in police custody. The Malayalam movie Piravi, of about old man searching for his son, was based on the story of Rajan.


NIT Calicut holds two major annual events, the technical festival Tathva held in the monsoon semester and the cultural extravaganza - Ragam which is held in the winter semester.


There are seventeen other National Institutes of Technology in India, one in each major state. They have been established for fostering national integration by imparting technical education to students from all over India. The admission to these institutes from 2003 is through the AIEEE (All India Engineering Entrance Exam).
