The collections

The collection of Erich Slomovic

The National Museum of Belgrade's pride, its collection of French art from the first half of the twentieth century, stems from the historic collection of French art merchant Ambroise Vollard (1866-1939), and his follower and admirer, the young Jewish Yugoslav Erich Slomovic (1915?-1943?), who was murdered by the Nazis in the Belgrade Sajmiste Camp. To this day, the sixty-year old legal battle that opposes the heirs of Erich Slomovic in Israel, the heirs of Ambroise Vollard in Paris and the successive administrations of Yugoslavia, Serbia and Montenegro and now Serbia still continues. More can be read about this in "Stolen Art", a thorough research carried out by journalist Victor Perry, published by Geffen Books, Jerusalem, in 2000. Published both in Serbo-Croatian and now in French (Editions Xenia, Switzerland, 2006), the book of Serbian writer Momo Kapor, "Le mystère Chlomovitch", also offers an interesting venture point into the affair. The question focuses on more than 500 works in all, in Paris and in Belgrade, some of which, like the "Portrait de Fernande Olivier, 1909" by Pablo Picasso, bear worldwide artistic significance.
