Comprehensive team results in each World Cup

Legend
  • 1st – Champions
  • 2nd – Runners-up
  • 3rd – Third place
  • 4th – Fourth place
  • SF – Semifinals (only in 1930, when no third-place match was held)
  • QF – Quarterfinals (1934-1938, 1954-1970, and since 1986: knockout round of 8; 1974-1978, second group stage, final 8)
  • R2 – Round 2 (1982: second group stage, final 12; since 1986: knockout round of 16)
  • R1 – Round 1
  • q – Qualified for upcoming tournament
  •    – Hosts
  • XX – Country did not exist or national team was inactive

The team ranking in each tournament is according to FIFA.[7] The rankings, apart from the top four positions (top two in 1930), are not a result of direct competition between the teams; instead, teams eliminated in the same round are ranked by their full results in the tournament. In recent tournaments, FIFA has used the rankings for seedings for the final tournament draw.[8]

For each tournament, the flag of the host country and the number of teams in each finals tournament (in brackets) are shown.

Performance by confederation

A summary of the number of teams for each confederation that reached the corresponding rounds in each tournament. Notes about peculiarities in some editions:

  • 1950 - The four teams that advanced to the ultimate round-robin group stage are considered, for the purposes of this calculation, as "semifinalists". Uruguay and Brazil, who played a decisive final game that was technically part of this group stage, are considered finalists.
  • 1974 and 1978 - The eight teams that advanced from the first group stage to a second group stage are considered, for ths purposes of this calculation, as "quarterfinalists". The top two teams from each group, who advanced either to a final game or a third-place game (and not to a penultimate knockout game), are considered "semifinalists", with the two teams who played in the championship, being designated the finalists.
  • 1982 - There were twelve teams which advanced from the first group stage to a second group stage. For the purposes of this calculation, this is not considered a quarterfinal but a Round 2 game. The four winners of this second group stage each advanced to a knockout semifinal game. Thus, no quarterfinal round was played that year.

Notes

  1. ^ a b c d e f g h i j k l m The Kingdom of Yugoslavia (1930) and the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (1950-1990) qualified eight times from 1930-1990 under the name Yugoslavia prior to its breakup by the secession of many of its constituent republics in 1992. This team is considered distinct from the one which qualified in 1998, also under the name Yugoslavia. The 1998 Yugoslavia team comprised the new state Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and is officially considered the predecessor of the team which qualified in 2006 under the name Serbia and Montenegro. The other national teams which resulted from the breakup of the original Yugoslavia - Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and FYR Macedonia - are also considered distinct entities from the Yugoslavia team of 1930-1990. With the independence of Montenegro in 2006, Montenegro and Serbia now compete separately, and the Serbia team is considered the successor of the team which qualified in 1998 and 2006.
  2. ^ a b c d e f Czechoslovakia was divided into Slovakia and the Czech Republic in 1993 after the Dissolution of Czechoslovakia. The two national teams now compete separately and are considered separate teams from Czechoslovakia.
  3. ^ a b c d e f g Germany was always represented by the same governing body (Deutscher Fußball-Bund (DFB)). After World War II and the division of Germany, Saar (until 1956) and East Germany (until 1990) fielded teams of their own before (re-)joining West Germany and the DFB in the German reunification. Thus, FIFA officially attributes all results of the DFB team since 1908 to Germany, including the results of West Germany which qualified for all World Cups since 1954, after having been banned for 1950.
  4. ^ a b c Indonesia competed as the Dutch East Indies in 1938.
  5. ^ a b c d e f g h i The USSR was dissolved in 1991. The 15 nations that were former Soviet Republics now compete separately and are considered separate teams from the USSR.
  6. ^ a b c The Democratic Republic of the Congo competed as Zaire in 1974.

  9. ^ The Asian team in 1970 was Israel, who were then an AFC member. They left AFC in 1972 and joined UEFA in 1994.
  10. ^ a b The Oceanian teams in 1974 (Australia) and 1982 (New Zealand) both qualified after playing in a continental zone consisting of Asian and Oceanian teams.
  11. ^ Australia's qualification in 2006 was through the Oceanian zone as they were an OFC member during qualifying. However, on 1 January 2006, they left the OFC and joined the AFC.
