The naval fleet is the principal component of a navy containing warships (surface and submarine), support ships, and ship-based aircraft used to conduct naval operations at sea. Generally understood to be the blue water, or oceanic, green water or littoral versus the brown water or coastal/riverine forces. The fleets of larger navies are usually divided into smaller numbered or named fleets based on geographic operating areas or on administrative groupings of same type ships. Naval Technology - C-40A Clipper - Naval Fleet Support Aircraft, USA (851 words)
The aircraft are to replace the Naval Reserve fleet of C-9B Skytrain aircraft which is approaching the end of operational life.
The C-40A is a variant of the Boeing Next-Generation 737-700C civil aircraft which is an increased gross weight, midsize version of the 737 family of twin jet airliners.
The aircraft are stationed at Naval Air Station Carswell Joint Reserve Base, Fort Worth, Texas, and the Reserve Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 58, based at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida.

The Naval Fleet Auxiliary Force began in 1972 with the transfer of the fleet oiler Taluga to MSC after a series of tests showed civilian crews could operate the Navy's fleet support ships more efficiently than Navy sailors.
In the years to come, the Naval Fleet Auxiliary Force will continue to be a vital, highly-productive and important support element for the U.S. Navy.
MSC reports to Fleet Forces Command and is one of three component commands reporting to the U.S. Transportation Command, known as USTRANSCOM.
