Background

In the Warcraft universe, the Necropolis "Naxxramas" is the citadel of the lich overlord Kel'Thuzad, and a current instance dungeon in World of WarCraft. The instance was released June 20, 2006 in patch 1.11, as previously confirmed by Blizzard Entertainment. It is believed that this will be the second to last patch before the release of World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade. // The Warcraft Universe is the fictional universe in which the Warcraft series of computer games, novels and announced movie are set. ... Kel'Thuzad's personal citadel is a floating undead Necropolis that hovers above the undead city of Stratholme in the fallen kingdom of Lordaeron, in the northern region now known as the Eastern Plaguelands. From here Kel'Thuzad wages a war against the Scarlet Crusade, the Alliance, and the Horde. Currently, Naxxramas is visible from outside Stratholme as a gigantic, floating Necropolis. Inside the Undead held part of Stratholme, just past Baron Rivendare's slaughterhouse, there is a gated Raid portal which does not lead to the Necropolis. Instead, entrance to Naxxramas is through a portal from the outside of Stratholme. As with the teleport entrances to Molten Core and Blackwing Lair, gaining access to the Naxxramas portal requires players to complete an "attunement". The attunement for Naxxramas is done via the Argent Dawn at Light's Hope Chappel, and requires a different amount of materials based on your reputation with Argent Dawn. At honored, attunement costs 1x Righteous Orb, 5x Arcane Crystal, 2x Nexus Crystal and 60 gold. Those at Revered reputation must turn in 2x Arcane Crystal, 1x Nexus Crystal, and 30 gold. Exalted individuals can obtain attunement free. Coinciding with the release of patch 1.11, a world event was started in which the scourge have mounted an invasion. During this event, scourge necropolises appear at many locations around the world and groups of undead congregate around crystal structures. Players can kill these undead to get rewards from the argent dawn.

Instance zone

Naxxramas is the most difficult instance yet designed for World of Warcraft's 40 man raids. It is currently more difficult than both Blackwing Lair and the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj. Only remarkably well-equipped and organized groups would go in with fewer than the maximum 40 people. Blackwing Lair is currently the end game instance dungeon in World of Warcraft. ... Blizzard comments

[W]ith Naxxramas we’re tuning it really to be the hardest raid dungeon out there. The number of people who have killed Ragnaros and so on is just going to keep getting larger and larger, so we really want Naxxramas to be at the top end and make it extremely challenging. With AQ we had a different design approach. With AQ we wanted the beginning to be approachable for Molten Core guilds but then we wanted a brick wall in Huhuran and the Twin Emperors where those guilds would realize they would have to leave and come back when they were a bit more experienced. With Naxxramas the shift in difficulty from the very first encounter to the very last encounter is much narrower. But the easiest encounter in Naxxramas should be around Twin Emperors level. - Jeff Kaplan, interviewed in the New York Times, May 11, 2006

Enemies

Naxxramas is divided into four wings - the Spider Wing, the Deathknight Wing, the Abomination Wing, and the Necromancer Wing - and the final section of the necropolis, the Frostwyrm Lair. These wings each hold different types of creatures includng cryptfiends and cryptlords, deathknights, abominations and risen dead, as well as necromancers and liches. Naxxramas contains 15 boss encounters. One of these encounters is a fight against four horsemen, so the number of bosses in the instance can be said to be 18. This number is as many bosses as Molten Core and Blackwing Lair combined, making it by far the largest instance in terms of boss content. Kel'Thuzad is known to drop 16 epic quality items, 8 of which are weapons, and the instance will include the quest for the legendary caster staff, the staff of Medivh. In addition, Kel'Thuzad will drop the ring piece of the Tier 3 armor sets available in the instance (Tier 3 sets contain 9 items). Ragnaros just after being Summoned by Majordomo Executus. ... Blackwing Lair is currently the end game instance dungeon in World of Warcraft. ...

Upon entering the zone, the raid may choose to tackle any one of the four wings listed below, although within each wing, the bosses must be killed in the order listed below. When the final bosses of all four wings are cleared, a portal to the Frostwyrm Lair is opened. Thus, unlike Ahn'Qiraj, there are no optional bosses in Naxxramas. Naxxramas Loot

Like all raid instances, Naxxramas drops very high quality loot. With this instance, Blizzard is trying to move away from some of the randomness of the boss set drops in Molten Core and Blackwing Lair, by using a token system similar to what is used in Ahn'Qiraj. Each boss in the four wings will drop either one or two "desecrated" quest items, which can be used by two or three (depending on the item) classes to create a piece of their tier 3 class set armor. Unlike the Ahn'Qiraj token system, getting the armor is not tied to reputation with a specific faction. Instead, the quest item is taken to an NPC at Light's Hope Chapel in the Eastern Plaguelands, who, in exchange for some trade goods and Naxxramas specific drops, as well as the desecrated item, will provide the player with their armor piece. Before a player can access these armor quests, though, he must complete a preliminary quest (Echoes of War) which involves killing some trash mobs from each of the four wings of the necropolis. Naxxramas also provides raids with the means to obtain high quality frost resist gear. Near the beginning of the Deathknight wing, players can talk to an imprisoned craftsman, Omarion, who will teach tailors/leatherworkers/blacksmiths the relevant frost resist patterns, provided they have sufficiently high Argent Dawn reputation. Each of these patterns requires a Naxxramas specific drop, called a frozen rune, which comes from melting runes on the walls of the dungeon. In addition, some bosses in the four wings drop frost resist gear. This new frost resist gear is provided because Sapphiron, being an undead frost dragon, will require a large amount of frost resist to defeat.
