Nayoro (Japanese: 名寄市; -shi, Ainu: Nay Oro) is a city located in Kamikawa, Hokkaido, Japan.


As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 27,311 and the density of 86.81 persons per kmē. The total area is 314.62 km&sup2.


The city was incorporated on April 1, 1956.

At 44 degrees N. Latitude and surrounded by mountains, Nayoro experiences temperatures rangeing from +35 degrees in summer to -35 degrees in winter and although rainfall is moderate, snowfalle is heavy.
Nayoro boasts the best snow for skiing anywhere in Japan and offers two areas for downhill skiing at Piyashiri ski-jo and ample opportunity for cross country skiing.
Nayoro is known as an area producing glutenous rice (used in making mochi and "arare"), and delicious vegetable, in particular, winter squash, green asparugus, and potatoes.

In Nayoro we had a lot more opportunities to interact with the other sculptors in a more informal way and we were not restricted by a set schedule.
We presented a book with sketches and messages of thanks to the president nicknamed snow man. He was very touched and hoped that he could convince the mayor and have the second competition next year and not in two years.
We were all sad to leave Nayoro the next morning, so were the volunteers and interpreters who came to the railway station to say goodbye.
