The Kingdom of Ndongo is first recorded in the fifteenth century. It was one of a number of vassal states to Kongo that existed in the region, though Ndongo was the most powerful of these. After several decades of resistance the kingdom was subdued by the Portuguese in 1671, but it continued to appear on maps into the 19th century. The Portuguese colony, extending far beyond the Ndongo Kingdom, its name was derived from that of the Ndongo king the ngola, also the source of the name Angola. A monarchy, (from the Greek monos, one, and archein, to rule) is a form of government that has a monarch as Head of State. ...
