The Nebuchadnezzar is a futuristic dark coloured mechanical hovercraft captained by Morpheus in the Matrix trilogy. Its name is a Biblical reference to Nebuchadnezzar, from the Book of Daniel. A hovercraft, or air-cushion vehicle (ACV), is a vehicle or craft that can be supported by a cushion of air ejected downwards against a surface close below it, and can in principle travel over any relatively smooth surface, such as gently sloping land, water, or marshland, while having no...

Relevant history Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. Hovercrafts were apparently built from the scrap of the Man/Machine War, which laid waste to the surface of the planet and left man enslaved in principle within a massive computer-generated world known as the Matrix. The Neb, as it was also nicknamed, was a medium-sized hovercraft in relation to others in the Zion fleet. While it was larger than Captain Niobe's ship, the Logos (which crewed only three people), the Neb was significantly smaller than ships like the Hammer, commanded by Captain Roland. Built in 2069, the Nebuchadnezzar was not designed for significant defensive action. Its only defense against the Sentinels is its armor and an EMP blast weapon. Unfortunately, this weapon has a limited range in disabling any Sentinels. Further, all electronic devices on board must be shut down before using the weapon. Use otherwise would result in all of the ship's equipment being disabled. Use of the weapon is a last-ditch measure to save the ship if crew members are still jacked in to the Matrix, as using the EMP weapon will kill anyone still connected to the Matrix. It seems that other ships in the fleet also have large and powerful mounted machine gun turrets. The Logos, Osiris and the Hammer have these weapons, but strangely enough the Nebuchadnezzar does not, most likely due to the fact that the idea of these guns came after the Nebuchadnezzar was first shown without them. In the The Matrix films, Zion was the last human city, which existed deep underground to hide itself from its enemies as well as for warmth. ...

Hovercraft like the Nebuchadnezzar were designed to patrol and hide within the massive large sewers and tunnels left over from the megacities that existed before the War. The purpose of this hovercraft was to covertly broadcast the minds of up to seven people at a time into the Matrix, where the crew would locate and free the minds of humans who are ready to understand the truth of the false reality. A ship's Operator would remain as guide, and prepares crews with navigation data and by hacking equipment and information in the form of programs sent directly to them. In the Matrix trilogy we see two Operators for the Neb: Tank and Link. Sewers transport wastewater from buildings to treatment facilities. ...

The hovercraft bridge was generally standardized on all ships, allowing for a pilot and copilot to fly. The EMP detonation switch was placed on the Operator console, and the bridge crew coordinated with the Operator to activate it as required, or the Operator could activate it at any time while others were off-ship or jacked into the Matrix to protect the ship. Every hovercraft is equipped with a transceiver, used primarily to broadcast a pirate carrier signal into the wireless network that forms the Matrix. This transceiver is also used to communicate with Zion Control, the security staff that monitors access into the city docks. Typically, hovercraft do not attempt to contact Zion or other hovercraft while on patrol as this could give away their position to Sentinels, killing machines that regularly hunt for ships. A transceiver is a device that has a transmitter and a receiver which are combined. ...
Wireless is an old-fashioned term for a radio receiver, referring to its use as a wireless telegraph; now the term is used to describe modern wireless connections such as in cellular networks and wireless broadband Internet. ...
It may also be assumed that the transceiver has a limited range which prevents contact with Zion. Hovercraft crews tend to communicate with each other while within the Matrix by way of the ship's Operator, which lessens the chance of being detected outside of the Matrix. The pirate signal can be traced by Machines if a connection to the Matrix is made for too long (as shown in the latter part of The Matrix). The Matrix is a science-fiction/action film first released in the USA on March 31, 1999, written and directed by Larry and Andy Wachowski. ...
Life aboard the ship was cold, damp, and spartan. While the crewmembers were furnished a basic blue (if crew) or red (if captain) tunic to wear as a uniform while docked at Zion, when on patrol the crew wore whatever confortable, warm clothing they could find, which were mostly ragged or ill-fitting. Quarters were tiny and dark, with an old mattress for sleeping. To minimize storage space and power usage for food preservation, the crew meals were primarily a soupy, synthetically created protein mixture that was visually and texturally unappealing. The Nebuchadnezzar was destroyed by a Sentinel's tow bomb near the conclusion of The Matrix Reloaded. The crew escaped before the ship's destruction thanks to Neo's newfound ability to identify and assume limited control over Sentinel hardware using his powers as The One as shown at the conclusion of the movie. The crew was found by the hovercraft Mjolnir (Hammer) very shortly after. To meet Wikipedias quality standards, this article or section may require cleanup. ...
