The Black Dragonflight

It was alluded in the past that Deathwing's Black Dragonflight was destroyed in ancient times, possibly during the War of the Ancients 10,000 years before the events in the first Warcraft games. Deathwing himself, in the Warcraft novel Day of the Dragon, confirmed that all of his females were killed, and made no mention of having any children. Though Deathwing was able to capture several eggs from the red dragonqueen Alexstraza, even the oldest hatchling would only be 15 years old by the time the events in World of Warcraft take place, and in any case would most likely be a red dragon. It seems unlikely that dragons as powerful as Nefarian and Onyxia were born from these eggs, so it can be assumed that the two siblings survived the disaster that destroyed the rest of the Dragonflight. Neither dragon makes any mention of Deathwing or his current whereabouts in World of Warcraft. Book cover of The Well of Eternity. ... Novel artwork by Samwise Didier. ...

Nefarian in World of Warcraft

Nefarian is a black dragon, the son of Deathwing the Destroyer and the current lord of the Black Dragonflight. His sister is the black dragon Onyxia. Like most dragons, Nefarian is a shapeshifter and can assume many different forms, but most commonly that of Lord Victor Nefarius. In this human form, Nefarian rules the dark fortress of Blackrock Spire, lording over the black dragons and the Blackrock Clan. Nefarian himself resides in the highest chamber of Blackrock Spire, which is called Blackwing Lair. Nefarian is one of the most powerful forces of evil in the World of Warcraft. Currently, he's had his black dragons and the Blackrock Clan gathering dragon eggs from the other four Dragonflights. Experimenting on the captured hatchlings, Nefarian has created powerful living weapons, including the drakonids, a race of humanoid dragons, and the Chromatic Dragonflight, dragons who wield the powers of all four Dragonflights and have none of the weaknesses. It has been rumoured that Nefarian is merely repeating experiments conducted by his father thousands of years ago, and that the results have thus far been inferior to Deathwing's efforts.

The goal of Nefarian's experiments are to create an army capable of destroying the Dark Iron Dwarves and their master, Ragnaros, who dwell deep within the caverns beneath Blackrock Spire. Once Nefarian's forces have destroyed the sinister dwarves and their elemental masters, Nefarian plans to turn his attentions to world domination.
