The noun NEGLECT is the state of not being cared for adequately. In the verb form, it could mean "to fail to care for adequately" or "to disregard". Forms of the word are:

It's origin is that of the Sixteenth Century, from the Latin neglect, meaning "disregarded", from the verb neglegere; neg meaning "not", and legere meaning "choose".
