She was born in Shurab, Tajik SSR, the daughter of a Korean father and a Tatar mother. In her early childhood she entered the Spartak Society school in Chimkent, Kazakh SSR. Her trainer was the Honoured Trainer of the USSR Vladimir Baidin. After Kim's competitive career was over she worked as a coach, until in 1996 she was elected to the Women's Artistic Gymnastics Technical Committee of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), and moved to the U.S.A. soon afterwards (where she still lives). Nelli also judges major international competitions, and has made some controversial decisions in the past. In the 1988 Olympics in Seoul during the battle between Elena Shushunova of the USSR and Daniela Silivas of Romania, Nelli scored Silivas much lower on the vault than the other judges. Nelli's score was not counted but her decision attracted much attention at the time and supporters of Silivas argue that the vault was unfairly judged. Nelli was also judging when an injured Kerri Strug performed her famous vault in the 1996 Olympics to clinch a first ever team gold for the USA. 1996 (MCMXCVI) is a leap year starting on Monday of the Gregorian calendar, and was designated the International Year for the Eradication of Poverty. ... ... At the FIG Congress held on October 22, 2004 in Antalya, Kim was elected President of the Women's Artistic Gymnastics Technical Committee. She has been one of those at the forefront of the upcoming alteration in the code of points, which most notably will end the use of the perfect 10 and introduce uncapped scoring for gymnasts. This move has been deeply controversial amongst fans and athletes alike: those lending their names to the 'save the 10' campaign included such notables as Lilia Podkopayeva, Svetlana Boguinskaya and Shannon Miller. It remains to be seen whether this new system, introduced in 2006, will rejuvenate the sport as Nelli Kim and Brino Grandi have promised. Memorable Olympic Moments: Nadia Comaneci (455 words)
Comaneci was supposed to contend with the Russian juggernaut but no one, including coach Bela Karolyi (who later coached Mary Lou Retton in 1984 and the Kerri Strug-led American women's team in 1996) could have imagined what was to come.
The final gold came in the all-around competition, with the Soviet juggernaut chomping at her heels.
In the end, the Russians wouldn't be denied as Kim won the vault and the floor exercises (with two perfect scores of her own) and then led her squad to the all-around team gold medal.
