Nelly Mazloum (1923-February 21, 2003) was an Egyptian actress, ballet dancer of Greek origins who also taught artistic belly dancing. Known for her characteristic sense of humor, she is famous for her role in the movie with Ismail Yasseen in Ibn Hamidu. Born in Alexandria, Egypt into a Greek Orthodox family, her christian name was Catherin-Nelly, she converted to Islam in 1952. In the 1963's she left Egypt and lived in Greece. A graduate of the Faculty of Arts, she pursued an acting and dancing career which lead her to the foundation of the Nelly Mazloum Mediterranean Archaic Dances Research Institute, MADRI (2001). She was cast for the first in a film in 1946 by director Abbas Kamel, which followed with another 17 films. She is the mother of Emanuel R. Andrew and folk singer Demis Roussos. Her daughter, Marianna R. Mazloum, also a dancer, has continued teaching dance classes after her mother passed away, and being the co-founder of MADRI Institute in Athens, Greece.
