Criticism

Nelonen was launched quickly and in an unprepared state. It has been criticised for importing "trash shows", instead of quality. Its documentaries, in particular, have been the subject of criticism. Entertainment value and the focus on highly emotive issues have earned the label of "the tabloids in documentary".

The role of Nelonen in the larger context of Aatos Erkko's corporation is interesting. The sole competitor of Nelonen in commercial television is MTV3. This channel threatens the position of Erkko's other media such as the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat in the competition for advertising revenue. As a result, Nelonen can be seen as a device to reduce the profits of MTV3 rather than introduce new television to Finland. Particularly in the beginning, Nelonen's haphazardly created concept added to this impression. Aatos Juho Michel Erkko (born 16 September 1933 in Helsinki) is a Finnish journalist and the main owner of SanomaWSOY and its Helsingin Sanomat newspaper. ... MTV3 is a Finnish commercial television station owned by Bonnier and Proventus. ... Helsingin Sanomat is the biggest subscription newspaper in Finland. ...
