Nemanjići led Serbia to a golden age which produced a powerful state with its apogee under Tsar Stefan Dušan in the mid-14th century, before finally succumbing to the Ottoman Empire (with Zeta, the last bastion, finally falling in 1499).

Stefan Nemanja was succeeded by his middle son Stefan II, whilst his first-born Vukan was given the rule of the Zeta region (present-day Montenegro).
