The Neman or Niemen (Belarusian: Нёман, Nioman; Lithuanian: Nemunas
In the Deutschlandlied of 1841, the Memel river is mentioned as the eastern border of a (politically yet to unite) Germany even though the Memelland north-east of the Memel river, up to the city of Memel, belonged to Prussia also.
At the delta the Neman splits into a maze of river branches and canals mixing with polders and wetlands and is a very attractive destination for eco-tourism.
Eastern Gotland Basin & Gdansk Basin (1873 words)
The catchment area of the Eastern Gotland Basin extends from the Nemunas River basin in the east to the Vistula River basin in the west.
Although there are five municipalities in the Nemunas River basin larger than 200 000 p.e., discharges from the three cities of Vilnius, Kaunas, and Klaipeda contain almost 80 percent of the total municipal discharges for the country.
The major polluters of the Nemunas River and the Kurskiy Lagoon are sulphite mills discharging substantial amounts of BOD, N, and AOX.
