Biography (as Ner'zhul the Orc Shaman)
Ner'zhul was introduced in Warcraft II: The Tides of Darkness. Initially, he was to be the first Orc to make a pact with the Demon Kil'jaeden but backed out at the last minute. Gul'dan, his second in command, fulfilled Kil'jaeden's pact, and was responsible for bringing the demonic Bloodlust upon the Orcs. This Bloodlust was instilled in the Orcs when their Chieftains drank the blood of the Pit Lord Mannoroth, in exchange for their services in conquering Azeroth and the Human kingdom. Kil'jaeden taught Ner'Zhul the art of Warlock magic, which replaced the Orc's elemental Shamanism. Ner'Zhul in turn trained other Orcs in the ways of Warlock magic. While The Horde invaded Azeroth, Ner'zhul remained in Draenor as chieftain of the Shadowmoon Clan, with the aid of his enforcer, the Ogre-Mage Dentarg. Later, Ner'zhul wanted to break his pact with the Demons and keep his people from killing each other. The reason for this is that he wanted an army of his own for the purpose of conquering new worlds. Ner'zhul also opened many portals to other worlds from the Orcish homeworld of Draenor; eventually causing Draenor to shatter and fall apart due to the instability of energy created by the rifts. Reeling from the defeat of the Orcs, Kil'jaeden turned his attention to those who remained. Seizing upon his wayward pupil of warlock magics, Kil'jaeden captured the fallen shaman. Ner'zhul watched in horror as the demon lord and his minions destroyed his body and tortured him by keeping his soul intact. Seeing opportunity even in defeat, Kil'jaeden resolved to use Ner'zhul and imprisoned him in a block of ice, bound to a set of armour within. This was sent to crash on the continent of Northrend, becoming buried deep in the frozen wastes of the Icecrown Glacier. Ner'zhul, now the undead Lich King, sent forth his new found power to engineer the Undead Scourge using his telepathy to call the subvertable to him, his necromancy to animate the corpses of the dead and a power over plague which would corrupt the still living to his cause. The Lich King, Leader of the Scourge The Lich King sent forth whispers across the world, recruiting Acolytes, including the wealthy Dalaran mage Kel'Thuzad, to assist him in creating the Plague. This Plague spread across the continent of Northrend, leading to the War of the Spider in the kingdom of Azjol-Nerub and later spreading across the Human lands of Lordaeron and its neighbours. KelThuzad is a fictional character in the Warcraft fantasy universe. ...
Under the command of his father King Terenas Menethil II, Prince Arthas Menethil was sent to investigate the causes of the plague slowly spreading in the northlands. A chain of encounters with the Necromancer Kel'Thuzad led to Arthas going to Northrend to find a solution to the progressing Undead legion in his homelands. Muradin Bronzebeard of the Dwarves told Arthas about a legendary runeblade, Frostmourne, rumoured to be hidden somewhere in Northrend.. Arthas decided to pursue Frostmourne as his only chance of defeating Mal'Ganis, the Dreadlord who Arthas had pursued to Northrend. The sword was reported to be cursed, but Arthas, desperate for revenge against Mal'Ganis, took up the blade. Before slaying Mal'Ganis, Arthas learns that his entire crusade was orchestrated by Ner'zhul in order to secure his position as champion of the Scourge. In Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, Ner'zhul the Lich King came under attack by Illidan Stormrage, who tried to sunder Northrend in order to destroy Ner'zhul. Illidan was under the orders of Kil'jaeden who wanted Ner'zhul removed as his independence from his former masters was too much of a threat. The Night Elf Sentinels, believing that Illidan was trying to destroy the entire world, defeated him, forcing him to retreat to Outland. There, Illidan was confronted once more by Kil'jaeden, who, impressed by the potential of his new servitors, granted him one final chance to destroy the Frozen Throne. He then led his Naga and Blood Elf troops to Northrend to destroy the Lich King. Illidan Stormrage (also known as Illidan the Betrayer) is a major character in the fictional Warcraft universe. ...

Frostmourne originally was a part of the imbued set in which the spirit of Ner'zhul was imprisoned, encased within the ice upon the throne in Icecrown Glacier. In enacting his plan to transform Arthas into the greatest of his Deathknights, sending forth Frostmourne from his prison, Ner'zhul shattered the ice which contained his essence. The resulting fracture served to bleed the Lich King's power from him. As a result, Arthas, the most attuned of Ner'zhul's minions felt this drain in power as it became critical. It is also this loss in power that resulted in the waning of control over the Scourge and the breakaway of Sylvanas Windrunner and her Forsaken allies. Mental communications from the Lich King revealed that he was in danger and compelled Arthas to attend his defence. On the journey to Icecrown, Arthas continually suffered seizures which sapped his strength. When finally arriving at the Glacier, the Lich King channeled his reserve of power into Arthas, enabling him regain his strength and defeat the combined forces of Illidan's Naga and Prince Kael'thas' Blood Elves. He met Illidan in battle and bested him, leaving him for dead upon the frost. Ascending the steps to the throne within Icecrown, Arthas beheld the ice-tomb of the unliving Lich King. Returning the blade to its master, Arthas completely shattered the ice encasing the armour of Ner'zhul, causing it to spill onto the floor. Arthas picked up the ornate helm and placed it upon his head, in doing so initiated a fusion of his being and the spirit of Ner'zhul, as was likely the Lich King's plan from the beginning. When last we see them, the fused being of the New Lich King sits implacable upon the throne at Icecrown, the walls of its former cavern having collapsed at the shockwave sent forth by the power of such a union. A single spire of ice, topped by the throne and bound by immense chains reaching off into the surrounding lake and cliffs, supports the single most powerful entity on Azeroth.
