After retiring as a player, Pumpido started to work as a football coach. After several seasons at Unión de Santa Fe he took over at Olimpia Asunción, winning the Copa Libertadores in 2002. It was not until the 1986 world cup finals where Pumpido was finally regarded as a top world class goalkeeper, he was excellent in the 1986 world cup finals, and Argentina’s 3-2 victory over West Germany in 1986 provided Pumpido with the first of two world champion’s medals.
His luck was not as good in the world cup finals in 1990, where he became injured in their second match against USSR, and his world cup career came to an end.
